Southport Cardinals: Contenders or Pretenders

The Southport Cardinals finished the 2013 regular season with an unblemished record and seem determined to make a deep run into the first ever IHSAA State 6A tournament. The road to the playoffs hasn’t been as easy as some would expect for the Conference Indiana league champions. Like most teams who have made it this far, Southport has dealt with their share of injuries and close games. However, the scoreboard has been in favor for the Cardinals.

Standout junior Dondaycee Millbrook feeds off the fact his team is the underdog even though they boast an 11-0 record. “Really I feel like we haven’t won anything yet, the feelings mutual with the team as well. We are happy and proud of our hard work. It’s been fun and unbelievable but we our focused on getting a W for this next game” said Millbrook. The Southport Cardinals have every right to be proud of their accomplishments thus far, but Millbrook is quick to let you know that in order to be the best, you must beat the best. “We worked hard to win these games and I feel like the teams we beat are pretty good but in order to get the respect we deserve, we have to play the teams that are the most talked about and the MIC is the hardest conference so you gotta respect those teams” Millbrook said. Dondaycee believes the advantage his team does hold in the playoffs is they trust each other. He said most of the players have been together since 7th grade and playing with his brother is also a bonus. Also factor in that senior running back Christian Perry is dangerous with the football in his hands. The senior has amassed 2282 yards rushing this season. Dondaycee calls his teammate Christian Perry a “gamer”. He said “that’s a man of many personalities. When he says he’s going to be clutch or unstoppable, he does exactly that!”

The undefeated Southport Cardinals will travel to Center Grove and faced the 10-1 Trojans who are the Co-Champions of the MIC. On Friday we will all know if Southport are Contenders or Pretenders.
