Which team is the real deal? With only a few weeks left in the season, the answer to that question is becoming clear. Several teams have sustained their excellent performance on the field, while others are beginning to peak at the right time.
Columbus East: BUY
Not too long ago, it seemed that the defending 5A champions were on schedule to experience one of their worst seasons (by their standards) in recent history. After two weeks, sitting with an 0-2 start, the Olympians got back on track in a conference they have dominated for over a decade. They were able to overcome a close scare two weeks ago, with a 20-19 win over New Albany. Bedford N. Lawrence is the only viable opponent left on the regular season schedule. Do not be surprised to see this team make a run and make an impressive third straight trip to Lucas Oil Stadium.
Heritage Hills: HOLD
The Patriots are off to their best start since 2007. Coming off an impressive win over Gibson Southern last week, coach Todd Wilkerson has his squad headed in the right direction. The Patriots have another test this Friday when they travel to Southridge. Why are we holding for now? Class 3A number one ranked team in Evansville Memorial awaits them in sectional 32. Barring an upset, this will likely be when this memorable season ends.
FW Wayne: HOLD
We may sound like a hater here. Yes we picked the Generals to lose last week against Snider. Yes, Wayne dominated the game. And yet, we still aren’t completely sold on them. Here’s why. Despite their five game win streak since their week one, 22-0 loss at the hands of FW Bishop Dwenger, the Generals will likely face the Saints again in sectionals. However, we commend coach Moore and the Wayne team on a fantastic season.
Bedford N. Lawrence: SELL
The Stars cracked our top 25 power rankings for the first time this week sitting at number 25. After six weeks, their 5-1 record may be misleading. Their loss to Martinsville in the opener has since been legitimized by the success the Artesians have had. However, the Stars wins since then, have been against inferior opponents. We’re not putting much stock in their one-point wins against a 3-3 Terre Haute South and New Albany team. The real test comes week nine when the Columbus East Olympians come to town. Until, ANY Hoosier Hills Conference team knocks off the Olympians. We are not buying.
